No one would have expected the most successful season in the history of Georgetown women’s soccer to be sparked by a 5-2 freshman. Leading the program to a record-setting 14 wins and its first-ever NCAA tournament birth was the last thing on Ingrid Wells’ mind when she arrived on the Hilltop last summer. Instead, the Upper Montclair, N.J. native was simply focused on earning the respect of an already tight-knit team.
“As a freshman, at least at first, you’re playing with a group of girls that you’ve only spent a few weeks with before games start,” Wells, a pure midfielder, said. “I had hopes of having a great season, but I didn’t come in expecting anything like this.”
“This” was the single most decorated season by a GU women’s soccer player ever. Her 13 assists, including 4 in one game, tied the Georgetown single-season mark, and tied her for eighth nationally in assists per game at 0.59. In addition, Wells’ 25 points fell just one short of the GU single-season record. These statistics only begin to reveal the extent of the freshman’s impact. Voted Big East Rookie of the Year, Wells was also named to the Conference’s First Team. Last week, SoccerBuzz Magazine named her First Team All-Mid Atlantic, First Team Freshman All-American and Third Team All-American.
Wells can’t help but smile when these honors are mentioned, but when asked about how she plans on topping a 2007 season that seemingly had it all, GU’s first-ever All-American responds with a calculated earnestness. “I hope to have a better year next year,” Wells said. “I hope to top myself every year.” Alert the awards committees.
