Fast Break

February 14, 2008

The Georgetown women’s basketball team came into their game against second ranked nationally Connecticut on a two game winning streak. The first win being over No. 22 Syracuse—the Hoyas’ first win over a ranked opponent in over four years. This momentum wasn’t enough to give the Hoyas another victory over a ranked team. Despite a hard fought first half, Georgetown was unable to contain the offensive barrage of the Huskies, falling 80-48.

The Huskies exploded out of the gate, going 8-12 from three-point range and shooting 53 percent from the floor in the first half. The Hoyas, on the other hand, couldn’t score with any consistency. They started 2-14 from the floor and found themselves down 48-17 by halftime.

Georgetown managed to get back on track in the second half. Senior center Aminata Diop finished with 11 points and six rebounds against Connecticut’s formidable frontcourt of Maya Moore and Brittany Hunter, and sophomore guard Meredith Cox tallied nine points on 3-5 shooting, all from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Jaleesa Butler also turned in a strong performance, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds.

The Hoyas fell to 3-7 in Big East play with the loss. They will try to get back on track this Sunday at Louisville.
