Hoyas add on the wins

April 24, 2008

The Georgetown softball team gave the Coppin State Eagles a two-part thrashing on Tuesday at Guy Mason Field. Thirty-two runs were scored in the double-header, all by the Hoyas, and each game was called on the mercy rule after the fifth inning as Georgetown sent the Eagles packing with 12-0 and 20-0 victories.

Sophomore Jennifer Connell led the drubbing by completely shutting down the Coppin State offense. In the five innings she threw during the first game, she allowed no runs, one hit, and managed thirteen strikeouts.

“As long as we get a good pitching performance we can win games,” head coach Pat Conlan said after the game. “We need to stay ahead and attack batters. Connell did that, she even hit a couple of ‘em.”

Not to be outdone, the Georgetown offense was solid in the first game, led by four hits from sophomore third baseman Demetria Cipriano. Sophomore shortstop Samantha Peters came in batting .363 on the season and was able to add two hits, including a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth.

The game got off to a slow start as the Hoyas struggled to find their rhythm against freshman Eagle Nichae Alston’s off-speed pitching. They were not able to muster the first of their twelve runs until midway through the second inning.

“We’re not patient hitters,” Conlan said. “[Eventually], we concentrated on competing with the game, not the other team. We started letting the balls come to us.”

In the second game, Coach Conlan mixed the lineup up a bit in what she called a “true team effort.”

This time, the dominant pitching came from Hoya freshman Melissa Conners, who pitched the second five-inning shutout of the day. Conners gave up one hit and struck out five, facing just one batter over the minimum.

Peters got the bats going again, adding nine RBI’s and another four hits with two home runs. She was just a single away from the cycle in the second leg of the double-header.

The Hoyas’ record improved to 20-26 on the season, adding to a program record for wins. The season concludes with Senior Day on Saturday, a double header against the Thundering Herd of Marshall University. The teams hit the field at 1 p.m.
