Caught Red-Handed

Department of Public Safety Officer Maurice Hunter responded to a student tip and apprehended a suspected bicycle thief near the Darnall Hall bicycle racks on Sunday evening. Two other suspects ran from the scene and remain at large.

“All three suspects ran away when Officer Hunter approached,” DPS Sergeant Andrew Powell said. Powell said that the apprehended suspect, a juvenile with bolt cutters and a screwdriver in his backpack, fell down as he attempted run away, enabling DPS officers to stop him. The suspect was charged with attempted theft and transferred to the Metropolitan Police Department, Powell said.

DPS officers recovered two bicycles and a motorized scooter nearby. Their owners have yet to be identified. 62 bicycles have been reported stolen at Georgetown since August 17, according to DPS Sergeant Joseph Smith.
