Slow-starting Hoyas look to derail Duke lax

March 19, 2009

Well, that didn’t go as expected. The Georgetown Men’s Lacrosse team is only five games into their a 14 game season, but the players and coachesand has already find found themselves in a sizable hole. Last weekend, the Hoyas dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in league play, losing 15-8 to Hobart in an ECAC League matchup.

“We’ve put ourselves in a position where every one of our games is big,” head coach Dave Urick said.

Georgetown has recorded losses earlier in the season to St. John’s and Syracuse as well.

In last weekend’s game against Hobart, the Hoyas had problems on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. In the opening minutes of the game, a failed clearing resulted in a steal and goal by Matt Smalley of the Statesmen. From that point on, it was all Hobart. The Hoyas entered halftime trailing 7-0. Despite a strong fourth quarter in which the Hoyas led 6-2, the Statesmen controlled the tempo for most of game.

The Hoyas’ goaltending was a problem; goalkeeper Jack Davis made only seven saves, letting 15 get past him.

Georgetown will have to perform well early in the first half in order to succeed in their upcoming games. The Hoyas have scored a paltry four goals in the first quarter of games this season, and too many times they have come up with too little too late in the fourth quarter. Junior net minder Jack Davis is will also going to have to step up his play as he becomes more comfortable in the net later in the season progresses. (Tramadol)

“It’s a matter of our guys being ready to play for everybody on the schedule,” Urick said.

This Saturday Georgetownthe Hoyas will travel to Durham to play the Duke Blue Devils, who recently suffered a heartbreaking loss to Cornell. The Blue Devils are very athletic  on the defensive side of the field, and their goalie, capable senior Rob Schroeder, has been waiting for his opportunity to step in up and shine. Other key players for Duke include junior attackman Max Quinzani and senior midfielder Brad Ross.

The Hoyas are still looking for a player who can consistently perform well throughout the entire season. Coaches and players will look to veterans such as senior Stevie Bauer to provide this dependable contribution. Bauer showed he can perform against Delaware, whom Georgetown defeated 12-6.

This week the Hoyas will be battling injuries. Sophomore Brett Weiss will not play on attack due to an ankle injury, and sophomore Ryan Shuler will be a game-time decision. As a result, Georgetown may be playing freshmen on attack, such as Zack Angel and Adam Donahue. Angel recently moved back to attack, where he played in high school. What better way to start your college career than to play against the Duke Blue Devils?

Face-off is on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
