Annual report shows increased crime

October 8, 2009

On-campus thefts and alcohol violations increased dramatically in 2008, according to statistics released by the Department of Public Safety on Thursday.

The 2009 Annual Crime Report, which covers the 2008 calendar year, showed a 46 percent increase in theft on the main campus, from 141 incidents in 2007 to 207 in 2008. Thefts also rose at the Law Center, with a 77 percent increase from 18 thefts in 2007 to 32 the following year.

On-campus alcohol violations rose considerably to 1,335 in 2008, an 160 percent increase from 512 in 2007. It’s also 604 more violations than the six-year average of annual alcohol violations, 731.

Four hate crimes were committed at Georgetown and in the surrounding area, according to the report.
Other kinds of crime decreased at Georgetown in 2008. Thefts in off-campus residences declined by 63% percent, from 54 to 20. Burglaries on-campus and off-campus both decreased as well.

University properties in Alanya, Turkey and Fiesole, Italy did not report any crimes, according to the report. Georgetown’s campus in Doha, Qatar, reported a burglary, an alcohol violation, and one possession of a prohibited weapon in 2008.

Georgetown is compelled to produce the Annual Crime Report by the Clery Act, a 1989 bill mandating disclosures about campus crime. The act is named after Jeanne Clery, a Lehigh University student murdered on her campus in 1986.

The Department of Public Safety did not respond to requests for comment.
