Football Pre-Game Primer: Defense key to Hoyas’ success in quest for Patriot League title

As the old adage goes, defense wins championships. And for the first time since 2011, the Georgetown football team (4-4, 2-1 Patriot League) finds itself contending late for the program’s first ever Patriot League title thanks in large part to its defense.

The Hoyas have held all of their Patriot League opponents to 17 points or less in their three league contests and have yet to allow any points in the second half. In the team’s win last week against Bucknell, the Blue and Gray defense withstood a last-minute drive deep into their territory to come away with a 17-9 victory.

While members of the Georgetown defense credited their recent performance to their scheme, they believe the defense’s personal unity has been the key.

“We have just been bonding as a unit,” said senior linebacker Matt Satchell. “We just click. We know we can trust the guy next to us to do his job.”

Senior defensive back Ettian Scott shared the same sentiments.

“It really has nothing to do other than we’re just a family,” said Scott. “Nothing’s stronger than the bond you have with your family.”

The recent efforts of the Hoya defense have not gone unnoticed. After the win against Bucknell, Satchell was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 18 total tackles, 13 solo  3.5 tackles for loss, career-highs in all three categories. For his play in his first career start, freshman safety Jeanthro Francois was named the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Week and Patriot League Rookie of the Week after compiling 15 total tackles, 11 solo tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack, and one pass breakup. Francois’ 11 solo tackles is a Georgetown freshman record.

Personal achievements aside, the Hoyas will look to continue their strong play at Lehigh (3-4, 1-1 Patriot League) this Saturday. The Blue and Gray will look to beat the Mountain Hawks for the first time since 1925. The Hoyas have lost their 14 meetings against Lehigh.
