Men’s Soccer Pre-Game Primer : No. 7 Hoyas continue Big East title chase against ‘Nova

Following a grueling overtime win over Seton Hall (0-13-1, 0-7 Big East), the No. 7 Georgetown men’s soccer team (11-2-2, 7-0 Big East) is set to take on bitter rival Villanova (8-7-0, 3-4 Big East) on the road this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

With a win, the Hoyas would be in prime position to capture the Big East regular season title.  The team currently sits alone at the top of the standings following a loss from No. 1 Creighton (15-1-0, 6-1 Big East) earlier this week.  A win versus Villanova would give the Blue & Gray a bit of breathing room, as it would make any result other than a loss in the regular season finale versus Creighton enough to secure the championship.

And with the new structure of the Big East tournament, a regular season championship would also secure home field advantage for the Hoyas throughout the conference tournament.

But the team knows that it cannot look too far down the road if it wants to accomplish its goals.  A slip up against Villanova could cost the team everything they have worked for this season. Georgetown junior defender Joshua Yaro was well aware of this fact.

“We don’t get ahead of ourselves,” Yaro said.  “We just keep preparing everyday wanting to be better than we were the previous day.”

The team can see their goals just in front of them, and are more determined than ever to see those goals come to fruition. Georgetown junior attacker Alex Muyl, who was key in the team’s recent victory over Seton Hall, noted the team’s resolve.

“We want to make history… Before the season that was one of our goals and it’s looming, and we’re just excited for it,” said Muyl.  “We’re a hungry, hungry group.  We want to go through the season without losing.”

The Hoyas offense has been on a tear of late, thanks in large part to the chemistry between Muyl and senior attacker Brandon Allen, whose two goals lifted the team over Seton Hall on Wednesday.  Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese can see the chemistry between the two growing.

“Alex and Brandon have a really good relationship right now in terms of the fact that they are both really happy to see the other person score the goal,” Wiese remarked. “And I think for Brandon and Alex together, they’re starting to play off each other really well.”

The Blue & Gray will look to carry that momentum into Saturday’s matchup in their final road game of the season.  The game can be seen on the Big East Digital Network.
