Georgetown’s resident K-pop star, Roy Kim, released his third studio album, The Great Dipper, last Friday. The South Korean singer-songwriter has won several major music awards and topped the charts in his home country twice. His musical style is best described as folksy acoustic, with the gentle strumming of a guitar as his signature characteristic. The new album features nine tracks and is available on Spotify.

The Great Dipper departs somewhat from his first two albums. Kim’s guitar is replaced at times with a piano, giving the album a slightly darker, more melancholic tone, rather than the light airiness he’s known for. Coupled with smooth, soothing vocals, the album has a soft, quiet feel to it, reminiscent of winter.

The title track is very representative of the album as a whole. It combines both a soft piano and a chorus of violins to create a beautiful mix of sounds. The song recreates the feeling one gets when gazing at the sky, alone on a cold winter night. Emotionally rousing and deeply comforting, it earns its place as the title track.

Other songs that stand out are “Remember Me” and “I Want To Love You. WithRemember Me, Kim gives a nod to the style of his previous work. The tune is guitar-based, and by far the lightest and most upbeat one on the album. “I Want To Love You” by contrast is a pure product of Kim’s new style. It is a slow song that features a single piano, playing a tune that evokes a quiet sorrow. “Lullaby, although not as strong of a song as others on the album, stands out for being the only track sung in English.

The album is an overall strong effort on Kim’s part. Individually, almost every song is beautifully crafted. Soft and chilling, this album is perfect for a cold winter night, whether you are curled up under a blanket or out for a stroll under the stars.
