D-Vine Providence: Women’s hoops uses strong defensive efforts to win second-straight

January 6, 2016

The Georgetown women’s basketball team (9-5, 2-2 Big East) won their second consecutive game Tuesday night, as the Hoyas defeated Providence (4-10, 0-4 Big East) 63-53 at McDonough Arena.

Sophomore forward Dorothy Adomako led the way for the Hoyas with game-highs of 19 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Dionna White had 11 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Katie McCormick added 10 points off the bench.

“This league is a grind,” Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair said. “Our kids right now are so focused and so dialed in.”

After Providence tied the game at 32 early in the third quarter, the Hoyas used an 11-2 run over the third and fourth quarter to take a commanding 52-40 lead after an Adomako layup with 6:06 left in the contest. The Friars never cut the deficit to under seven points after that.

With the Hoyas only shooting 36 percent from the floor, Adair’s squad had to rely on their defense for much of the game to stay competitive. The Blue and Gray held the Friars to 37 percent shooting while also forcing 20 turnovers, which they converted into 26 points. Junior forward Sarah Beale was the only Friar to score in double-figures with 16 points.

“We honed in to what we have been preaching all year, which is defense,” said Adair. “We held Providence to 37 percent from the field, and that is when we are successful. So even on a night when the ball isn’t falling, we can still defend.”

The Hoyas will look to extend their two-game winning streak when they play at No. 24 DePaul (10-5, 3-0 Big East). It will be Georgetown’s first game against a ranked opponent this season. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday with the game televised on the Big East Digital Network.
