Men’s Soccer Looks to Rebound in Home Opener

August 30, 2018

The Georgetown men’s soccer team (1-1, Big East) will host Radford (0-2, Big South) in its home opener on Friday afternoon at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET.

The Hoyas enter the game on the heels of a disappointing double-overtime loss at then-No. 18 Coastal Carolina (1-1, Sun Belt) on Sunday afternoon. The Blue & Gray managed an early lead in that game thanks to a goal by sophomore forward Derek Dodson, but a late corner kick for the Chanticleers resulted in a game-winning strike in the 102nd minute. The Hoyas conceded 13 shots while managing six of their own. Freshman goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis recorded six saves in the defeat, which was good enough to earn Big East Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

Meanwhile, Radford enters the contest following back-to-back losses to open the season. However, the Highlanders finished 10-4-4 last season, reaching the Big South semifinals, and were selected to finish second in the conference this year. While Radford failed to score a goal in either of its opening two matches, the Hoyas will need to be wary of the visitors’ attacking prowess, as redshirt senior forward Kieran Roberts, last season’s Big South Attacking Player of the Year, looks to open his account.

The sides have met twice before, with the Hoyas claiming victory at home in both meetings. Follow @GUVoiceSports for live updates throughout the game.
