Campaigns end, GUSA voting begins

“If Georgetown tries to encroach on my rights, we’re going to rock it like a hurricane,” Tom Karwacki (MSB ’09), a Georgetown University Student Association presidential candidate, said as he tore off his shirt in the middle of the Hoya’s first GUSA presidential debate on Tuesday night. “Rock You Like a Hurricane” blared from a set of speakers amidst the 50-plus attendees in the audience. Karwacki and six other GUSA hopefuls answered questions from the Hoya, the Voice and the audience for an hour and a half.

Taking back gender identity

“Will I get beaten up tonight for walking around on campus with a pink undershirt?” Associate Director of Student Programs and LGBTQ Community Resources Coordinator Bill McCoy asked as he grabbed his t-shirt for emphasis. As part of the “Gender Motivated Violence and Perspective” panel on Wednesday night, McCoy focused on how violence affects those who express gender in a non-traditional way, including transsexuals.

CMEA’s boon

A Georgetown program that provides college preparatory services to low-income middle and high school students in the District will get a large boost due to a recent gift. The Meyers Institute for College Preparation, a program of the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access, will use the additional funds to expand their program by 500 students over the next ten years.

New firing powers proposed for D.C. schools chancellor

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty proposed legislation Friday to give his newly-appointed schools’ Chancellor Michelle Rhee increased authority to fire previously protected employees.
