Everything to gain for Hoyas in first D.C. Cup
Despite winning only three games in the past two years, the Georgetown football team is looking to the 2008 season with unabashed optimism. They open their season this Saturday in an historic match-up called the D.C. Cup against Howard University, the first ever meeting of the two teams.

Court Troubles
After America’s third place finish in the 2006 World Championships, the international basketball community couldn’t help but wonder how far Team USA would fall and how long their shameful plummet would take. The answer came to me in the past week and a half as I begrudgingly dragged myself out of bed to watch the “Redeem Team” trounce its various opponents. We have already hit rock bottom.

No “I” in team
Has anyone ever wondered how illogical professional sports drafts are? It is the only time when the most qualified applicants for a job hope to get hired by the dregs of their field. If any reader finds me a Harvard Business School student who falls asleep at night praying to be hired by the now-defunct Bear Stearns or any one of its fellow sinking ships of the investment world, I would be impressed. It exposes something uniquely selfish about professional sports: first, how the individual has essentially come to define the team, and second, how mediocrity and failure are, in a sense, rewarded.

GU track heads outdoors
Winter was a kind season for the Hoya Track and Field Program. The men finished third in the Big East and won their first Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) title since 2002, and the women finished second in the Big East. In addition, sophomore Andrew Bumbalough and senior Matt Debole earned All American honors and lead the men to a 17th-place finish in the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Hoyas win big at home against the Blue Hens
Georgetown’s 12th-ranked Men’s Lacrosse team beat the Blue Hens of Delaware University 18-10 in its fourth game of the season yesterday. The Hoyas, who suffered a tough double overtime loss to Syracuse this past Sunday, got back on the winning track against the 7th ranked Blue Hens (5-0). The win was the Hoyas’ first against a ranked opponent in three tries. Delaware, which made a surprise run to the Final Four last season on the heels of junior face-off specialist Alex Smith, dropped to 3-1 against ranked opponents after knocking off UMBC, Rutgers and Albany.

Hoyas vs. Cardinals
In her fourth season as head women’s basketball coach, Terri Williams-Flournoy has made some giant strides with the program overshadowed by the Georgetown men’s basketball team. Williams-Flournoy led the team to a 10-3 record in the non-conference season, including winning streaks of five and three games. With one of the best defenses in the Big East, the Hoyas have beaten a ranked Syracuse team, lost by a mere 10 points to national powerhouse Rutgers and, despite a 3-7 Big East record, have been a thorn in the side of many of the league’s leaders.

Women get first Big East win
Having dropped their last four contests going into Tuesday’s game, the Georgetown women’s basketball team was in a funk. In those four games, though, the team showed true determination and signs of life—most notably in their mere 10 point loss to the fifth ranked Scarlet Knights of Rutgers and senior forward Kieraah Marlow’s 34 point and 17 rebound tear against 16th-ranked Notre Dame. But Tuesday’s game against Seton Hall was a different story.

Rough conference beginnnings
After posting an impressive 10-3 non-conference record, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (10-6, 0-3 BE) looked to break a two-game Big East losing streak against reigning conference champion and national runner-up Rutgers (14-2, 4-0 BE) this past Tuesday at McDonough Arena. Despite being a heavy underdog against the fifth-ranked Scarlet Knights, the Hoyas entered the game undefeated at home this season and were confident leading up to the game. With the Hoyas’ 57-47 loss, though, the team has now started 0-3 in conference play for the first time under head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy.

FAST BREAK
Closing the gap from last year’s 100-point loss, the Georgetown men’s swim team fell to Villanova by a score of 140-100 last Saturday. Although the men won only four of the 13 events, several individual performances caught Head Coach Steven Cartwright’s eye. Despite their winless record, Cartwright is convinced that the team is not in a slump.
