On the record with potential Post pundit Conor Williams

On Wednesday evening, Georgetown PhD candidate Conor Williams (GOV ’11) discussed his entry to the Washington Post’s “America’s Next Great Pundit” essay competition with the Voice. At the time of publication, Williams’ essay about the impact of the D.C. mayoral election on education reform, “Real Education Reform,” was in fifth place.

News hit: GU applies for bonds

Georgetown’s new science center could receive a major boost in funding thanks to a application recently submitted by the University for $90 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds. Associate Vice President of External Relations Linda Greenan announced the application at an Oct. 4 meeting of Georgetown’s Advisory Neighborhood Comission.

At 9:59 a.m. on a Saturday in July, I entered an epic Internet battle. The stakes? A free ticket to the Virgin Mobile FreeFest. My challengers? The 30,000 others vying to see Pavement, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., and Ludacris without dropping an obscene amount of cash. By 10:03 a.m., the ravenous hordes had claimed all of the available tickets.

SFS pioneer passes away

On Sept. 5, R. Smith Simpson, who helped found Georgetown’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, died near his home in Charlottesville, Va. He was 103. Simpson was a career Foreign Service officer. After receiving his law degree from Cornell University in 1931, he served as a labor policy advisor for the National Recovery Administration. He spent 23 years in the U.S. Foreign Service and later helped select future diplomatic officers, which showed him that many candidates’ knowledge of international geography, culture, and sociology was deficient.
