Quake rocks L’Aquila

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Italy last Monday, reducing much the small town of L’Aquila to rubble, claiming 289 lives and leaving thousands of others injured and homeless. The tragedy hit close to home for the Georgetown Italian department, which conducts a summer study abroad program in the small medieval town.

SFS-Qatar holds first ever career fair

Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar hosted its first-ever career fair last Thursday in Doha. Open only to SFS-Q students, the fair included representatives from 24 companies, including ExxonMobil, BP, Al-Jazeera Children’s Channel, the Brookings Institution, and the Qatar News Agency.

Progress for voting rights

The District of Columbia’s ongoing struggle to obtain voting rights in Congress made significant progress when the motion for cloture on the D.C. Voting Rights Act passed in the Senate by a 62-34 vote on Saturday. Although this is just the first in a series of steps the bill will need to take before becoming law, it is the first time it has managed to overcome this preliminary hurdle.

After raunchy e-mail, sorries and sanctions for IRC

After an offensive prank e-mail was sent out to the International Relations Club’s more than 350-person listserv last week, the Student Activities Commission imposed sanctions on the club at their Monday meeting. Instead of funding two or three Model United Nations conferences, as they have in the past, SAC will only be providing funding for one next semester.

We passed the Church of Scientology, and, luckily, they were offering free personality tests and guided tours. It sounded like a pretty sweet deal. Who doesn’t like free things from an organization that’s well known for being controversial? We approached the ornate wooden doors and entered without knowing it would be another three hours until we would manage to escape.
