Cough it up

October 30, 2008

Georgetown has become the fourth most expensive college in the nation, according to a report issued  this week by Campus Grotto, a website that covers college news. According to Grotto, students who attend Georgetown will pay $49,689 for the 2008-2009 school year, a total surpassed by only Sarah Lawrence College, George Washington University, and New York University.

According to the Georgetown Office of Student Financial Services, the average student also spends $3,306 on fees, books, travel, and personal expenses.
Grotto also said that Georgetown placed 36th in actual tuition costs. University spokesperson Julie Green Bataille attributes the disparity between the two placements to a rise in operating costs.

“Many of our operating expenses continue to increase at rates higher than inflation-utilities, technology, and financial aid to name a few,” Bataille said.
At Georgetown, this year’s total cost represents a 5.5 percent increase from last year. According to the College Board, the average rise in total costs at four-year private colleges was 5.6 percent.
