The Sports Sermon

On Saturday, the Georgetown football team proved that it can excite its fans. After losing two fumbles, it looked like it would be business as usual for a Georgetown opponent. However, the Blue and Gray pulled out another impressive homecoming victory. There was one thing, though, that did not excite me about the Hilltop footballers on their way to victory: their celebrations after good plays, which involved acting out a basketball jump shot.

Stuntin’ like their daddies

When the Georgetown men’s basketball team tips off its season against Hartford, the program will be entering its 100th season. Georgetown boasts one of the nation’s most storied college basketball programs, which began in 1907. If the Hoyas are going to throw any kind of birthday party this year, you can expect it to be a dance party, just like the ones that have become a staple of Midnight Madness at Georgetown.

What is it like to have the dreams of an entire city riding on your shoulders? Every sports fan in your city depends on you to bring them the glory that they have been starved of for years. The pressure and strain must be unbelievable. Then again, if you happen to have the broad shoulders of LeBron James, this task may not be out of the question.

Controversy filled the lungs of the World Series faster than Kenny Rogers could wash his hands. I am not a Tigers fan but have been supporting them this postseason. Rogers’ dirty hand, though, made me begin to question my support of possible cheaters. I couldn’t let my baseball morals deteriorate.

There he was. A short-haired, flashy point guard was orchestrating the Phoenix offense to perfection. The weird thing was this player bore a striking resemblance to the reigning two-time MVP, Steve Nash of the Suns. He looked like Nash. He wore Nash’s No. 13. More importantly, he played like Nash, dishing out amazing assists and splashing three-pointers. I asked myself, who is this guy? And what did Phoenix do with Nash? Then it clicked. This guy was Steve Nash.

Chris Wright from St. John’s College H.S. verbally committed to play for the Georgetown Hoyas next year. Last season he averaged 21.8 points for St. John’s and is the No. 6 ranked point guard in the 2007 recruiting class.

Raised on Soccer—Three siblings show their skills in the U.S. and across the pond

Two young soccer players stand at midfield set to kick off another match. One has his foot resting on the ball and the other stretches out while they await the sound of the referee’s whistle. Fast forward a little more than a decade. One of the young boys is now a senior co-captain of the Georgetown University soccer team, while the other is a member of the U.S. National Team and plays for Reading FC of the English Premier League, one of the top soccer leagues in the world. Those two young boys are much more than teammates, though. They are brothers.
