Go the distance

Three years ago this sports writer began his career with the Voice as a sophomore. I remember that first article, an introduction to then-new athletic director Bernard Muir. Countless columns, game coverages and features have followed in the time since then. This week marks the last time my byline will grace these pages.

Softball hit hard by Maryland

Poor hitting plagued the Georgetown Hoyas (18-28) in a doubleheader in College Park against Maryland on Tuesday. The Terrapins won both games, 1-0 and 8-0.

Court troubles

I haven’t been able to stand watching Georgetown play basketball lately. My roommates and I frequently curse at the television, and no player has been safe from our lashings. Even JTIII has been the recipient of a few unkind words. Every time I watch the highlights of top teams like UNC, Texas, Kansas and UCLA, I can’t help but think how scared I’d be to watch Georgetown play any team in the current top seven. It’s not that Georgetown can’t beat these teams, but with the way they are playing right now the Hoyas would get smacked, straight-up. Don’t let the recent blowout of Cincy fool you. If they want to play in April, the Hoyas have some things to fix, and quick.

Unnoticed win

It had been two years since I’d attended a Georgetown women’s basketball game. Back during the 2005-2006 season, I watched every game from the press table as I covered the team for these pages. That year, after a back-and-forth start in the win and loss columns, the losses came in bunches in a 3-13 conference campaign.

Hoyas tip off tennis season

With the basketball team receiving most of the hype on the Hilltop these days, the Georgetown tennis program is quietly getting into the swing of its spring season. The men got off to a quick start last Friday taking down East Carolina 3-1 and Longwood 3-0 at the VCU Men’s 4×1 Invitational in Richmond, Va.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

Earlier this week, the Presidents of the Big East Conference voted to change the men’s and women’s conference basketball tournaments beginning in 2009. All 16 teams will make the tournament at the end of the season, instead of the top twelve that do now.

XC makes waves in KY

A few days of rain left the ground at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, KY, a bit wet Saturday, but the flat course at the Big East Cross Country Championships provided few challenges for Georgetown’s runners, with senior Melissa Grelli’s first place finish providing the highlight of the weekend.

Switch Hitting: a weekly take on sports

The American League dwarfs the National League in top-tier teams. Most people expected any of the four AL playoff teams to be able to blow away the NL representative with offensive firepower once the World Series rolled around.
