Softball hit hard by Maryland

April 10, 2008

Poor hitting plagued the Georgetown Hoyas (18-28) in a doubleheader in College Park against Maryland on Tuesday. The Terrapins won both games, 1-0 and 8-0.

Georgetown sophomore pitcher Jennifer Connell allowed only four hits in game one. A two-out, RBI triple by the Terps’ clean-up hitter Brittany Bessho scored Sarde Stewart in the bottom of the first for the only run Connell would give up in six innings. It would be all that Maryland needed, though, as pitcher Sarah Dooley held the Hoyas scoreless while striking out nine for a three-hit complete game.

The Terrapins struck early again in game two. Stewart and Kerry Hickey both had RBI hits as part of a three-run first inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Bessho got back in on the offensive action with Stewart and Hickey, as all three drove in runs to push the Maryland lead to 6-0. The Terps added two more in the sixth against the Hoyas’ freshman starting pitcher Melissa Conners to cap off the 8-0 victory.

On the mound for Maryland, sophomore Lindsey Wright matched her teammate Dooley’s earlier performance. Wright struck out four and gave up only one hit for her second shutout in as many games.

The Hoyas have a week to work the sticks in the cage before heading to George Mason for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16.
