Hoyas tip off tennis season

January 24, 2008

With the basketball team receiving most of the hype on the Hilltop these days, the Georgetown tennis program is quietly getting into the swing of its spring season. The men got off to a quick start last Friday taking down East Carolina 3-1 and Longwood 3-0 at the VCU Men’s 4×1 Invitational in Richmond, Va.

Red-shirt senior captain Jeffrey Schnell led the Hoyas with a win against East Carolina’s Stephen Whitwell in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 7-6). A singles victory by sophomore Will Lowell coupled with a doubles win by senior captain Ted Tywang and sophomore David Tillem secured the victory for Georgetown.

Against Longwood, Schnell once again produced a victory for the Hoyas, this time partnered for doubles with junior Kevin Walsh. The two are ranked No. 12 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. On Friday they won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The other victories in the shutout were provided by Lowell and Tillem in singles play. Sophomore Anthony Tan and Tywang were both ahead in their singles matches before they were called.

The men will test their undefeated start against Old Dominion tomorrow, while the women, led by senior captains Liz Winokur and Stephanie Cohen, will kick off their season. Matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
