The Sports Sermon

This week’s Monday Night Football game featured the Atlanta Falcons playing at the New Orleans Saints. For the first time since the 2004/05 NFL season, “playing at the New Orleans Saints” really meant playing at the New Orleans Saints.

Sports

Have a heart

It’s hard to feel compassion for those we hate. We cannot possibly conceive of a way to feel the faintest touch of guilt for despising a seemingly selfish and egotistical human being. But sometimes our preconceived notions of a person and our perceptions of their character are purely superficial and keep us from really understanding the person “underneath the pads.”

Hoyas draw first blood, Bears claw back for win

When the Georgetown football team found the end zone to open Saturday’s game, it was the first time since the end of the 2004 season that the Hoyas scored a touchdown in the opening quarter of a game.

Sports

GU heartbreaker

Sometimes in sports, things don’t go the way they should. The Georgetown women’s soccer team (3-3-3, 0-1 BE) lost their final non-conference game of the season last Sunday against the James Madison Dukes (4-4-0) in a 1-0 game they should have won.

Sports

Hoyas get first BE win, then fall to Rutgers

Soccer matches are not usually decided in the final minutes of play, but the Georgetown men’s soccer team (3-5-0, 2-2-0 BE) played two such contests over the weekend as they split a pair of Big East road games.

The Sports Sermon

Major League Baseball, welcome to parity. Baseball is starting to enjoy its own parity, and I love the new excitement that comes with it.

Sports

Spoiled brat

I’ve been spoiled. For the last three years my Boston Red Sox have made the playoffs.

Sports

Hoyas get first win of season

If you don’t score, you can’t win. Last Saturday afternoon in the heart of the Hilltop, Georgetown’s young defense took this simple rule to heart.

Sports

Men’s soccer caught in a storm

Sometimes no matter how well you play, you just can’t seem to come out on top. And so it goes for the Georgetown men’s soccer team (2-4-0, 1-1-0 BE), who dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting St. John’s (4-2-0, 1-1-0 BE) on Sunday, two days after downing rival Syracuse (3-2-0, 0-2-0 BE) 1-0 in double overtime.

Sports

Hoyas serve it up

The Georgetown women’s volleyball team (5-4) came home last Friday determined to dominate in their house, and they did exactly that.

Sports

Ladies soar past AU Eagles

The Lady Hoyas soccer team (3-1-3) completed the D.C. sweep on Wednesday afternoon by shutting out American University (4-2) 2-0.

Sports

The Sports Sermon

O-H! I-O! As I headed back to Georgetown from the Rosslyn Metro on my roommate’s bike late Saturday night, this was a chant I was surprised to hear.

Sports

Handcuffed

Nothing holds a candle to the spectacular criminal feats of the NFL. Football players have been remarkably proficient in showing that they are, as many believe, above the law.

Sports

Hoyas drenched by the Crusaders in season opener

On a Saturday afternoon spoiled by rain and crummy weather, the Holy Cross Crusaders rained on the Georgetown football program’s opening-day parade.

Sports

Men hit losing skid

The Hoyas (1-3-0) will go into the Big East season on a three-game losing streak after dropping matches to eventual champion then-No. 8 Creighton (1-2-1) and Missouri State (2-1-1) at the Ameritas Classic in Omaha, Neb. this past weekend.

The Sports Sermon

The Sports Sermon would like to take a timeout and pay tribute to one of the greatest men of our generation.

Sports

Pocket ace

As Andre Agassi concluded his illustrious career with a third round loss to Benjamin Becker at this year’s edition of the American slam, a question had to be posed: What happened to his heir apparent?

Sports

Women get first win of season at D.C. Invitational

In what was supposed to be their home opener, the Georgetown women’s soccer team (1-1-2) was forced to go on the road and recorded its first loss of the season.

Football names new quarterback for season opener

Georgetown’s football team is looking brand spanking new as they get ready to try to put a spanking on their opponents throughout the 2006 season, beginning Saturday at home against Patriot League foe Holy Cross.

Sports

Women draw twice

The Georgetown women’s soccer team (0-1-1) battled through two double overtime ties to open up their 2006 regular season this past weekend at the Navy Tournament in Annapolis, MD.
