Curling for Columbine

At 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday, I found myself wandering in a dreamlike stupor down a desolate 36th street to my friends’ house. My friends and I welcomed in the baseball season by wiping crusted eyes to watch our beloved Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from the Big Egg in Tokyo, Japan, with stadium vendors selling whiskey while ushers blew whistles to alert oblivious fans of approaching foul balls.

St. John’s storms by Georgetown baseball

Georgetown’s baseball team dropped the rubber match of a three-game set against Big East foe St. John’s this weekend. The Jonnies reversed a 4-1 defeat Saturday night to win 5-1. The Hoyas dropped to .500 in conference play (3-3) and 17-13 overall this season.

Men’s lacrosse be-devils Duke again

Georgetown Senior midfielder Walid Hajj is a 2004 pre-season All-American. With 3:14 remaining in Sunday’s game against no. 7 Duke, he showed why he deserved the honors.

Hajj scored his only goal of Sunday’s game on a rocket of a shot deep in the fourth quarter.

Men’s lacrosse squeaks past Hobart

Entering Saturday’s contest against Hobart, the no. 6 Georgetown men’s lacrosse team knew that they had more to lose by falling than their unheralded opponent. However, head Coach Dave Urick also had particular motivation to win the game, having come to Georgetown from Hobart, where he won 10 consecutive Division III national titles for the school.

Women’s lacrosse holds off devils, riding on top

SPORTS BY VINCENT MCGILL The women’s lacrosse team entered a tough two-week stretch against top-10 opponents this past Sunday against Duke. The no. 2 Hoyas remained undefeated after a highly contested match but the victory was hard fought.

GU baseball surpasses 2003 win total

Junior Catcher Andrew Cleary’s two-run homerun was the difference in Georgetown’s 3-1 victory over visiting Navy. The win takes the Hoyas to 11-2 at their home field in Bethesda, Md. (15-11 overall). Senior ace pitcher Kevin Field pitched a one-two-three first inning in his return from a shoulder inning.

“It’s an open and national search, and the search begins immediately,” said University President John J. DeGioia on the head coaching vacancy at Georgetown. The real question is, does Georgetown have the prestige to get what it desperately needs: a marquee coach to turn around the sputtering program?

BC finishes off Hoyas season, Esherick

Georgetown’s disappointing season came to expected end in the first round of the Big East tournament with a 68-57 loss to the Boston College. The Eagles used their superior size advantage to win their earlier Big East encounter against the Hoyas and once again utilized their interior size advantage to control the game.

Hokies cause disappointing end to women’s season

SPORTS BY TIMOTHY FOLLOS 25 minutes of solid basketball weren’t enough for the Georgetown women’s Basketball team to win their Big East Tournament game against Virginia Tech on March 6. A summary of the team’s last game could also serve as an abstract of their entire season: Despite a great effort from senior forward Rebekkah Brunson the Lady Hoyas were edged by slightly superior opposition.

Brunson leads women’s hoops through mixed week

In a frustrating year for fans of Georgetown basketball, the women’s team has occasionally provided succor. The team, after all, boasts two record-smashing players, senior Rebekkah Brunson-the first woman ever to lead the Big East in both scoring and rebounding-and Mary Lisicky-a junior who broke the university’s three-point shooting record earlier this season.

Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams stretched winning streaks over spring break and into this first week back. The women, now ranked no. 2 in the United States Women’s Lacrosse Association top-20, beat two conference foes and William & Mary, while the men defeated Cornell, Penn State and Delaware.

Curling for Columbine

As I sat down Sunday to simultaneously watch the CBS and ESPN men’s basketball tournament selection shows, I awaited hearing where my team would be headed. Unfortunately, that team is my hometown Texas Longhorns, not my beloved Hoyas.

If someone told me five years ago that I’d be certain Texas was in the tourney and Georgetown was out, I’d have called them crazy.

Hoyas crush ‘Cuse, knighted by Rutgers

SPORTS BY TIM FOLLOS Georgetown’s Women’s Basketball Team (12-13, 6-8) split two home games last week, losing to Rutgers 66-71 on Saturday, then beating Syracuse 82-59 Wednesday evening. Junior guard Mary Lisicky, who exploded for over 20 points in both games, said that the Hoyas continue to look forward to post-season play.
