Panthers effectively defanged

After losing five of their last six games, the Women’s Basketball team got a much-needed victory Saturday, using balanced team scoring to down a struggling Pittsburgh squad, 72-61.

After struggling in recent games against ranked teams, the Hoyas hope to use this victory to propel themselves toward a post-season tournament bid.

In what has been a great year of college basketball, I’m very proud that my team is at the top. My hilltop Jesuit University is flat out balling this season, undefeated with a great chance of gaining a no. 1 seed going into the NCAA tourney in March. Led by a great coach and dominant backcourt, I really think this is our year.

Rebound then confound: Hoyas split two

SPORTS BY TIMOTHY FOLLOS A promising week for the Women’s Basketball team turned sour Wednesday night, as the Hoyas lost to No. 23 Notre Dame 66-52. Behind a record setting performance from Mary Lisicky and another great effort from Rebekkah Brunson, Georgetown won an emotional game against a strong Villanova team Saturday.

Slightly less heralded than the Georgetown basketball program is Georgetown’s very own ballroom dancing team. Consisting of about twenty members, the team meets regularly to perfect various dances.

The club, which has tabled relentlessly and flyered throughout the semester, has attracted a number of new members to both its novice and experienced programs.

The Georgetown men’s basketball team travelled to Miami last Saturday in desperate need of a conference win. Their test would come against a Hurricanes team that had been peaking recently and has played well at their rowdy home, the Convocation Center, since it was opened last season.

In the past, when the Super Bowl half-time show was more talked about than the actual game, you could be sure of a blowout.

In 2001, the Baltimore Ravens’ defense pummeled the New York Giants en route to a 34-7 spanking. I don’t have a clue who performed at half-time that year, but a Martha Stewart show would have received more attention than the game itself.

After a week in which the Hoyas broke two close games open in the second half-eventually beating both No. 19 Virginia Tech and St. John’s by wide margins- Georgetown’s Women’s Basketball team was not able to continue the trend Sunday. The Hoyas lost a nail-biter to Big East nemesis Rutgers University, despite Rebekkah Brunson’s record-setting performance.

Ahhh, one of the greatest weeks of any sports fans’ year is upon us. Super Bowl week brings annual speculation, pompous declarations, and over-hype of a game that only occasionally (last in 2002) lives up to the hype.

SPORTS BY CAMERON SMITH Of all the things said by Coach Craig Esherick in his nine minute press conference following the Georgetown’s stirring last second victory over St. John’s on Tuesday night, perhaps the most important was, “Guys made plays.” A comment conspicuously absent from the past two Hoyas squads, the claim was echoed by what Esherick called, ” the best performance of his career,” from senior forward Courtland Freeman.
