The Sports Sermon

“Dear God, please, make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away from here.”

Jenny, the sermon is with you. We need to get far, far away from Philly as soon as possible, or else we’re going to cry.

First, it was the Eagles getting to the brink of the Super Bowl, now it’s the Phillies waiting til the last week of the season to let their playoff-hungry fans down.

Fantasy Land

This is my sixth year playing fantasy football. It’s getting out of contol. This year, I’m in four fantasy football leagues. I’m hooked, and I might need help.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term “fantasy football,” it’s time to get familiar. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be in charge of a team of superstars, or ever yearned for a new outlet to talk trash, fantasy football is for you.

SPORTS BY CACILDA TEIXEIRA The Georgetown men’s soccer team bounced back nicely from a 3-0 shutout at St. John’s on Saturday to win their second game of the season 3-1 against Towson University at North Kehoe Field on Tuesday. The Hoyas improved to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big East.

Hoyas defense a no show at Holy Cross

Georgetown continued its poor start to the 2003 football season with a 42-34 loss at Holy Cross on Saturday. The Crusaders held off a late Hoyas surge in a contest which showcased the offensive abilities of both teams.

Georgetown was led by the “big three” of senior quarterback Andrew Crawford, first-year quarterback Alondzo Turner and senior wide receiver Luke McArdle.

Three points and a lot more

Besides showcasing the Tuna’s much-anticipated return to the House that Hoffa Built, Monday’s game and between the Giants and Cowboys brought professional kickers to the forefront of the national sports media.

My lifelong allegiance to the Giants prevents me from yet speaking publicly about the game itself with any shred of civility or reason.

The Sports Sermon

Miss Cleo beware, you have company! “Be ready, ” Jamal Lewis told his friend on the Cleveland Browns. “I’m going to break the single season rushing record.”

What started out as a little trash talking turned into one of the greatest self-predictions ever made.

Fakemakers

When the football season begins anew, there are always a few tweaks that follow the first few weeks. Whether its Sunday afternoons or Tuesday nights at 9 p.m., serious tweakage needs to take place.

Kurt Warner went from the comfy confines of his starting position to the familiar surroundings of checkout lane nine.

Football loses opening-day nailbiter

SPORTS BY GEORGE TARNOW The Georgetown Hoyas, and most of the 2,406 fans in attendance, were looking for revenge when they met the Colgate Raiders this past Saturday in the season opener on Harbin Field. Revenge was in the cards until the Raider struck with six seconds left in the game, and stole a victory, 20-19.

First-year forward Schramm steps up

First-year Hoyas forward Ricky Schramm does not look intimidating on the soccer field. He’s 5-foot-11, 155 pounds, and average size. What he lacks in size, however, he makes up for in ability and personal style.

“Ricky is somebody you wouldn’t want to play against,” said Head Coach Keith Tabatznik.

Men’s soccer struggles on road

Coming off the D.C. College Cup tournament win Labor Day weekend, the Georgetown men’s soccer team posted a disappointing follow-up, tying Indiana University and losing to Boston University in the UC/Adidas classic Friday and Saturday in Storrs, Conn.

The Sports Sermon

So how was it? The first hang-over sitting on-the-couch, hand-down-the boxers Sunday of football watching? Holla! We struggle getting out of bed for our 1:15 classes, but you know we jumped out of bed at noon for some football watching.

Sports

Run for it

Don’t be fooled by the sunny weather. Fall is coming, and it’s coming fast. Come November, you’ll either stop exercising (yeah, you know I’m talking about you) or you’ll be regulated to the likes of a lab rat, helplessly treadmilling within the musky environs of Yates Fieldhouse.

Field hockey starts season with a split

The first weekend of action is over for the Georgetown women’s field hockey team, and despite splitting a two-game series versus Longwood University and St. Joseph’s, the Hoyas showed enough offensive firepower to give them plenty of optimism for the rest of the season.

A weekend to forget

Women’s Volleyball (1-2)

The Hoyas finished a disappointing 1-2 this past weekend at the Brion’s Grille/Doubletree Patriot Invitational at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The homecourt advantage helped the George Mason Patriots, as they hit .347 for the match and handed Georgetown a 3-0 loss (30-19, 30-24, 30-26).

The Sports Sermon

Baseball fans, are you foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the end to this National League Wild Card ridiculousness? Fantasy football owners, have you picked up Olandis Gary and noticed how nasty the Buffalo Bills defense is becoming? Madden 2004 junkies, have you mastered the playmaker yet? Detroit Tigers fans, are you embarrased that your manager pulled Jeremy Bonderman from the starting rotation only two losses from a 20-loss season? Don’t worry Tigers fans, Mike Maroth is 6-19 and still in the rotation.

Sports

Boooooooooooo!

I recently took a road trip to Veterans Stadium with a few Boston fans to catch the Red Sox-Phillies game. During the rainy roller coaster of a 13-9 game, my friends couldn’t help noticing something. As my Fenway-friendly fan put it, “man, these Philly fans really know how to boo!”

Throughout the game we listened to between 15 and 20 booings.

After a season in which the Georgetown women’s soccer team posted the highest winning percentage in team history and narrowly missed a berth in the NCAA tournament, expectations are higher than ever as the possibility of a first-ever national tournament spot looms large.

Team opens season with D.C. College Cup

The Georgetown men’s soccer team returns this season a year older and a year wiser.

“The year of experience that we got last year was vital,” said Senior defender and co-captain Carl Skanderup.

When it comes to experience, Skanderup is somewhat alone with only keeper Tim O’Hagan and midfielder David Eder returning for their senior season.
