First-year forward Schramm steps up

First-year Hoyas forward Ricky Schramm does not look intimidating on the soccer field. He’s 5-foot-11, 155 pounds, and average size. What he lacks in size, however, he makes up for in ability and personal style.

“Ricky is somebody you wouldn’t want to play against,” said Head Coach Keith Tabatznik.

Men’s soccer struggles on road

Coming off the D.C. College Cup tournament win Labor Day weekend, the Georgetown men’s soccer team posted a disappointing follow-up, tying Indiana University and losing to Boston University in the UC/Adidas classic Friday and Saturday in Storrs, Conn.

Hoyas take rival American in D.C. Cup

SPORTS BY CACILDA TEIXEIRA The Georgetown men’s soccer team took the D.C. College Cup for the first time in its three year existence, tying the American University Eagles 1-1 in a double overtime. The Hoyas won the tournament title on goal differential, 5-4.

Field hockey starts season with a split

The first weekend of action is over for the Georgetown women’s field hockey team, and despite splitting a two-game series versus Longwood University and St. Joseph’s, the Hoyas showed enough offensive firepower to give them plenty of optimism for the rest of the season.

A weekend to forget

Women’s Volleyball (1-2)

The Hoyas finished a disappointing 1-2 this past weekend at the Brion’s Grille/Doubletree Patriot Invitational at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The homecourt advantage helped the George Mason Patriots, as they hit .347 for the match and handed Georgetown a 3-0 loss (30-19, 30-24, 30-26).

Detroit Tigers fans, are you embarrased that your manager pulled Jeremy Bonderman from the starting rotation only two losses from a 20-loss season? Don’t worry Tigers fans, Mike Maroth is 6-19 and still in the rotation.

Boooooooooooo!

I recently took a road trip to Veterans Stadium with a few Boston fans to catch the Red Sox-Phillies game. During the rainy roller coaster of a 13-9 game, my friends couldn’t help noticing something. As my Fenway-friendly fan put it, “man, these Philly fans really know how to boo!”

Throughout the game we listened to between 15 and 20 booings.

Cycling enthusiasts get their fix with Tour

Every July, the media covers the oft-neglected sport of cycling. American excitement about the Tour de France has risen steadily as Lance Armstrong comes closer and closer to becoming the greatest cyclist of all time. Casual fans enjoy sporadic articles about the “drive for five,” Lance and the United States Postal team’s push for five consecutive tour victories.

The Georgetown men’s soccer team returns this season a year older and a year wiser.

“The year of experience that we got last year was vital,” said Senior defender and co-captain Carl Skanderup.

When it comes to experience, Skanderup is somewhat alone with only keeper Tim O’Hagan and midfielder David Eder returning for their senior season.

Tumultuous summer for Hoyas hoops roster

The Georgetown men’s basketball team is rebounding from a tumultuous year, during which they lost six of 14 players on their roster to graduation, transfer or ineligibility. Only two of last season’s starters will be returning this year-senior guard Gerald Riley and sophomore forward Brandon Bowman.

New basketball assistants settle in

The Hoyas roster wasn’t the only part of the men’s basketball team that underwent a major overhaul this summer. When assistants Ronny Thompson and Chip Simms left the team to take a position at the University of Arkansas and explore other coaching options, respectively, Georgetown was left with two significant holes in its staff.

Scavenge, win

I don’t really do sports. I sit on the couch and watch them. I listen to my friends talk about them. I even watch a basketball game or two at Yates while I’m running on the treadmill. But I don’t do sports.

So what got me up at 6:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning to jog two miles? And why am I loading up on carbs and consuming four Nalgenes of water a day? It’s because the race of all races, the challenge of all challenges, the adventure of all adventures is just around the corner.

Not on track

While the basketball and baseball teams’ lack of adequate on-campus facilities receives more press, arguably no one at Georgetown has been as negatively impacted by the absence of a facility on campus as the men’s and women’s track and field program. Since 1974, now-Director of Athletics Joseph Lang’s first year as Director of Track and Field, the Hoyas have produced 126 All-Americans in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Even taking into account track’s unique status as a three-season sport, the team has averaged more than four new All-Americans each year, with many achieving multiple honors.
