A Georgetown student was shot in the arm in West Georgetown during an armed robbery this past Saturday.

The victim, Helen Obregon (SFS ‘06) has since been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for her injury.

The three Georgetown University students involved reported the assault to the Department of Public Safety at approximately 10:45 p.m. Saturday evening. The group had been walking toward O Street on 33 Street when two unknown males approached them, demanding valuables at gunpoint. Obregon was shot in the arm as the students walked away after surrendering their valuables.

The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot north on 33 Street.

“We are very concerned about the recent violent incidents off campus and are working with the Metropolitan Police Department to assure a safe environment for our students,” University spokesperson Erik Smulson said in response to a request for a University statement.

Tonight, Gabriela Vilaro (SFS’06) will lead the signing of a petition that calls for an increase in the University’s security budget. She is also inviting students to write proposals for improving the current security system.
