GU Day ignites school spirit

On Tuesday, the second annual Georgetown Day was marked by a celebratory atmosphere of games, food and performances that culminated in a farewell celebration for outgoing University President Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J.

According to Jamal Epps (CAS ‘01), one of four coordinators of Georgetown Day, the celebration was created last year in response to the “unfortunate incidents” that occurred last year, including the vandalism of the Menorah in Red Square. Last year, a group of students spearheaded the idea to promote the positive features of the Georgetown community.

The festival, intended to unite the community with displays of student talent, succeeded in its goal, according to Brian Walsh, Georgetown University Student Association Vice-President.

“It was great to see so many different student performances,” Walsh said. “I liked how students were able to sit with their friends on Copley lawn and listen to other students perform.

Patrick Koehler (CAS ‘04) attended Georgetown Day and enjoyed sitting on Copley lawn.

“It was warm and sunny and everyone was happy,” Koehler said.

David Bholat (SFS ‘04) said he came to Georgetown Day to show support for O’Donovan.

“I was touched and delighted by his speech,” Bholat said. “I’m not Catholic, but he’ll always be like a father to me.”

According to Epps, Georgetown Day may become a school tradition. He hopes to invite alumni back to campus to enjoy Georgetown Day in the future, Epps said.

Walsh said he wants to make Georgetown Day more accessible to students.

“We should discuss with administrators the strengths and weaknesses of canceling classes for Georgetown Day next year,” Walsh said.
