Men’s basketball?RaMell Ross, a sophomore guard-forward will miss the first three months of the season because of a broken right foot, Head Coach Craig Esherick announced Wednesday.
Ross played a reserve roll last year, averaging just two points and 1.3 rebounds. However, with the transfer of guard Demetrius Hunter, Ross was to have a larger roll this year.
In other basketball news, the Hoyas were picked by Big East coaches to finish first in the league’s West Division on Wednesday. By earning 12 of the 14 first-place votes and 90 overall points, Georgetown edged Syracuse and Notre Dame to finish on top.
Also, Big East coaches named senior guard Kevin Braswell to the Preseason First Team All-Conference, while sophomore Michael Sweetney was named to the Preseason Second Team.
Men’s soccer (6-7-1, 4-3 Big East)?Despite Saturday’s triumph over Big East foe Connecticut, the Hoyas fell 1-0 to Navy on Tuesday night. Even though Georgetown had 17 shots on goal to the Midshipmen’s nine, Navy stole the ball midway through the second half and led a three-on-two fast break to score the game’s lone goal. Sophomore keeper Brian O’Hagan had four saves for the Hoyas in the loss.
Volleyball (13-1, 6-1 Big East)?Making a bid to be Georgetown’s most succesful fall sport, the volleyball team won its fifth straight match on Tuesday, defeating Virginia 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-22).
Senior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina had a match-high 24 kills, while junior outside hitter Lauren Warner had a well-rounded match with 14 kills, nine digs and three service aces. Freshman middle blocker Sara Albert hit .750 with nine kills (with no errors in 12 attempts) and posted two blocks.
