DPS grants SafeRides extension

In response to a request by the Georgetown University Student Association, Department of Public Safety officers will provide escorts for students from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. once the SafeRides van service ends at 3 a.m.

GUSA had requested that SafeRides itself be extended until 4 a.m.

Last week, Vice President for Student Affairs Juan Gonzalez told the Voice that he wanted to extend SafeRides. Gonzalez and Director of Public Safety William Tucker encountered opposition from many of the SafeRides student drivers who did not want to work until 4 a.m.

“The difficulty is in getting students to give up their weekend night,” Gonzalez said. “Those hours are really difficult to staff.”

GUSA also restarted SafeWalks, a program that provides on-campus student escorts for other students.

According to a GUSA press release, student escorts are available from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Sophomore Representative Anthony Marinello coordinated the weekend’s shifts, which received over 20 calls over the weekend. SafeWalks will continue indefinitely,” the press release added.
