On Wednesday afternoon a telephone stood in the center of Red Square next to a poster that read, “The U.S. must not attack Iraq.”

The Young Arab Leadership Alliance set up the event to enable students to call their senators’ offices to voice their oppositiong to the potential attack on Iraq.

According to event leader Nabeel Yousef (SFS ‘05), more than 50 students stopped to phone their senators during the day. Everyone passing through Red Square was very supportive of the cause, he said.

Yousef said that he feels it is a crucial time for students to voice their opinions because the Senate is voting Wednesday night on a resolution concerning war with Iraq.

“As opposed to most campus activities, this is one where we are empowering students. We aren’t sitting around and whining, we are doing something. We are voicing our opinions,” said Youself.

In support of “Don’t Attack Iraq” week as well as Human Rights week, YALA, the Muslim Student Association and Campus Greens said that they will be holding events every day next week concerning human rights issues around the world.
