Interim Chaplain Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J. will leave Georgetown this summer to become President of the University of Scranton, a Jesuit university in Pennsylvania. Pilarz’s departure coincides with the appointment of Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J. to Vice President for Mission and Ministry, a newly created position.

Boroughs is currently Rector of the Jesuit Community and Assistant to the President for Jesuit Identity at Seattle University. He has also taught at both Seattle University and Gonzaga University, as well as served as the National Chair of the Rectors of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Beginning July 1, Boroughs will coordinate Campus Ministry, but will not be involved in the day-to-day running of the department, according to Catholic Chaplain Catherine Heinhold.

“[Boroughs] will focus on the sharing of Ignatian spirituality and the formation of all our students in ways that respect that diversity,” said DeGioia in a broadcast e-mail.

Boroughs will work with Campus Ministry to restructure the department, DeGioia said in the e-mail. Heinhold said that although there may be departmental changes in the future, nothing has changed in the structure of campus ministry in the past few months.

It is unclear whether the title of University Chaplain will remain as head of Campus Ministry or whether the position will be redesigned, Heinhold said.

“Burroughs will consult with campus ministry to figure this out,” she said.

Pilarz could not be reached for comment.

In his e-mail, DeGioia thanked Pilarz for his commitment to Georgetown. “Father Pilarz did much to ensure the continued strength and vitality of our diverse Campus Ministry programs across all three campuses,” DeGioia said.

Heinhold said that Pilarz worked not only on strengthening campus catholic ministry, but on strengthening the interfaith ministry as well, she said.

“[Pilarz] brought a lot of really good administrative and pastoral skills and helped us to get on a good track this year. He’s done a great job. I’m excited for him but sad to lose him,” Heinhold said.

Pilarz was acting as Interim University Chaplain after former University Chaplain Adam Bunnell, O.F.M., left on June 30 of last year.
