Women’s Volleyball (1-2)

The Hoyas finished a disappointing 1-2 this past weekend at the Brion’s Grille/Doubletree Patriot Invitational at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The homecourt advantage helped the George Mason Patriots, as they hit .347 for the match and handed Georgetown a 3-0 loss (30-19, 30-24, 30-26). Junior Sara Albert led the Hoyas with 7 kills while sophomore Rachel Nelson and sophomore Ashley Lancaster added 6 a piece. Junior Margaret Verrnon dished out 20 assists for Georgetown.

The Hoyas fared a little better in their match against Southwest Missouri State in the second part of their double header but still fell 3-1 (30-19, 30-19, 25-30, 30-24). Vernon and Lancaster contiuned their solid play for the Hoyas. Vernon tallied 39 assists and 11 digs while Lancaster posted a career-high 18 kills. For the second game in a row the Hoyas couldn’t crack the .200 barrier, hitting .189 for the match. Southwest Missouri State’s .296 average and 12 blocks proved to b too much.

The Hoyas will next play in the Cal State Sacramento Tournament on Sept. 5-6. They will be matched up against Fresno State, Oregon State, UC-Riverside and Sacramento State in the two-day event.

Women’s Soccer (0-1)

The Hoyas took on the William and Mary Tribe in their season opener this past Saturday. The two teams battled back and forth until the 70th minute when William and Mary freshman forward Katie Hogwood broke the scoreless tie. The Hoyas were led by junior Nicole Depalma’s two shots on net. First- year Chrissy Skogen and Senior Jessie Beers-Altman added a shot attempt a piece and Georgetown managed eight shots in all. The Tribe’s goal was spectacular, as Hogwood took a long pass, split two defenders, and ripped a shot past Georgetown goalkeeper Louisa Butler for her first career goal. Butler had a solid game with four saves but could not block Hogwood’s shot that ended up in the lower left corner of the net. Unfortunately, the Hoyas will have to sit on the loss a little longer as their home opener was rained out yesterday.

The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. on Georgetown’s North Kehoe Field.
