Women’s soccer (2-5-0)

The Hoyas continued to bounce back from a shaky start to the season by shutting out the host Syracuse Orangemen 2-0 for their second straight win. Though Syracuse st a strong tempo, Georgetown struck first. Senior Courtney Schaub scored off first-year Chrissy Skogen’s corner kick 31 minutes into the first half. The Hoyas followed with an insurance goal shortly therafter with junior Elizabeth Roberti’s strike off a deflection sent in by sophomore Shara McNeill during the 43rd minute.

The Georgetown defense was stout in the second half, overcoming a 4-1 deficit in corner kicks to the aggressive Orangewomen. First-year goalkeeper Erin Mazursky made five saves in the shutout, and improved to a perfect 2-0 on the season, lowering her goals per game average to 1.0.

Men’s golf

The Hoyas won their second straight tournament by a nail-biting one-stroke margin last Sunday and Monday at the James Madison University Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. JMU had a strong second day to narrow the Hoyas’ lead, but the Dukes were outdone by the strong showing from senior Nick Cooke, who placed second individually with a three-round score of 207. Sophomore David Erickson and first-year Tim Moynihan also recorded key performances, each tying for 15th individually.

The victory at the 17-team tournament followed last week’s win at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., and gives the Hoyas strong momentum heading into their next appearance at the Oct. 13-14 Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati.

Women’s volleyball (4-9)

The hard-hitting Hoyas continued a recent trend of splitting tournament matches. Junior Sara Albert recorded her fourth-consecutive all-tournament performance in Philadelphia this past weekend. At the Temple University Invitational, the Hoyas were knocked off by the host Owls in three games on Friday night, but rallied by sweeping past St. Peter’s 3-0 on Saturday.

Georgetown’s .039 hitting percentage was overpowered by Temple’s .308 game average. In the 3-0 Temple victory (30-20, 30-16, 30-16), Albert and junior Margaret Vernon tied for the match high in blocks with five each, while sophomore outside hitter Rachel Nelson and freshman middle blocker Annie Connor recorded five kills each.

The team was able to bounce back after the Temple defeat by knocking off St. Peter’s 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-15). Junior Julie Grauert fielded a strong performance for the Hoyas, posting seven digs and earning a position with Albert on the all-tournament team. Sophomore Ashley Lancaster posted a match high 10 kills, along with five service aces and six key digs. Albert provided a strong game of her own, hitting .533 of her balls and ending with eight kills, and two aces. The Hoyas’ hitting percentage improved to a respectable .276, a positive step heading into Big East play this weekend.

Women’s Field Hockey (1-7)

Georgetown scored on a pair of penalty-shot goals by senior Lauren Gallaby and the Hoyas entered halftime with a 2-1 advantage over American University yesterday afternoon on Kehoe Field.

American opened up the scoring in the second half with back to back goals in the 39th and 41st minutes of play. First-year Leeanne Rizzo tied the game in the 50th minute for Georgetown with an unassisted goal. From there on it was all American, as they scored the final three goals of the match.

The Hoyas are at home for their next game against UMBC on Sept. 27.
