Women’s basketball
The Georgetown women’s basketball team showed its new look on Monday defeating the Turkish national team 73-57 at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas were lead by double doubles from senior forward Rebekkah Brunson, sophomore guard Carmen Bruce and senior forward Varda Tamoulianis.
Georgetown went into the locker room with a 37-20 lead, led by Tamoulianis who had 11 first half points. The Turkish team sowed some signs of life in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits but the Hoyas retaliated with tremendous efforts from Brunson and Bruce to take the game 73-57.
Brunson had 10-second half points and a total of 15 for the game in addition to 12 rebounds. Bruce had an equally impressive night with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Although the Turkish team was considerably bigger than the Hoyas, Georgetown managed to out-rebound its opponent 46-25.
The Hoyas begin regular season play on November 21st at George Washington University. Tip off is 7p.m.
Swimming and diving
Despite top finishes from senior Juliana Bonilla and the diving squad, the Georgetown swimming and diving team fell to Seton Hall University 141-86 on the men’s side and 134-107 on the women’s side on Saturday in South Orange, N.J.
Bonilla posted a first-place finish in the one-meter diving and second place in the three-meter diving. With her performance against the Pirates, Bonilla now holds the Northeast conference’s highest mark in the one-meter event and added to her lead in the three-meter event. Senior Kathryn Hotchkiss placed second in the one-meter diving and first in the three-meter diving. Sophomore Katie Amaro took the 500-yard freestyle with senior Colleen Newman taking the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Corinne Rhodes took first in the 200-yard breaststroke and second in the 200-yard individual relay.
For the men, first-year Terry Huang extended his gold medal diving streak to five with a sweep of both the one and three meter events and extended his undefeated streak to three meets.
The Hoyas will face Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. on Nov. 14. The start time is 5 p.m.
Women’s volleyball
The Georgetown women’s volleyball team posted mixed results this weekend as they defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 3-0 Saturday at McDonough Gym and fell to Rutgers 3-0 on Sunday at McDonough.
On Saturday, the Hoyas extended their winning streak to three games, beating Seton Hall 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-24), behind strong play from junior middle blocker Sara Albert. Albert posted a match- high 15 kills, no errors and a match-high three aces.
The team also saw string play from sophomore outside hitter Rachel Nelson who registered her eleventh double double of the season with 11 kills and five digs. First-year middle blockers Annie Connor and Basak Karamehmet each posted a match-high four blocks. Junior setter Margaret Vernon finished with a team-high 24 assists.
Georgetown out hit Seton Hall .286 to .233 and edged the Pirates in blocks 7.5 to six.
Albert posted another solid game in the loss to Rutgers on Sunday. She finished with nine kills, a .600 hitting percentage, a team-high three blocks, three digs and an ace. Nelson led the Hoyas with twelve kills. First-year right side Jessica George posted a match-high .833 hitting percentage. Senior captain Jennifer Ward finished the night with 15 assists, four kills and three digs.
Rutgers outhit Georgetown .420 to .208 and outblocked the Hoyas 10-5.
The Hoyas face the University of Connecticut Huskies on Friday, Nov. 14 in McDonough Gym. Game time is 8 p.m.
