OK, everyone call off the rest of the season. It’s time to name a champ. UCONN is better than anyone else in the country is. Far better. In fact they may be the best college hoops team to come along in a decade. Now, the serm doesn’t want to curse them into losses, (remember that Fear Da’ Frogs article?), but we don’t think that’s possible. Emeka Okafor looks like the most dominant big man since Tim Duncan, and first-year Charlie Villanueva, who would have been a top-5 pick in the NBA draft last spring but opted for a year at UCONN first, can’t even crack the lineup.
Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson called this team the best he has faced off against in “probably the last decade”. In the UCONN-OU game Sunday, the Huskies led sixth ranked OU by as many as 30 in the second half. Now that is domination.
Still, there’s some interesting stories left to play out over the rest of the season:
1.) Will St. Joseph’s ever lose? Jameer Nelson looks good enough to carry them through the season, especially since their done with the hardest part of their schedule.
2.) Who will survive the ACC bloodbath? Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC all look strong, and Maryland has potential for a top-15 type team if they get big wins.
3.) Will the Big East only get (gulp) three or four teams in the tourney? With weak out of conference schedules and parity at a high, there may only be a trio of teams dancing this spring.
4.) Will the new, fast breaking Hoyas win any big games? Over the past couple of years the grind ‘em out style never got it done for GU, but if the shooters lock on, this team may be able to climb where the past couple fell off.
