After losing the season opener to Temple at the MCI Center last Monday by a score of 75-57, the Georgetown men’s basketball team rebounded to win its last two games. Last Friday, the Hoyas thrashed the Citadel 69-34 and continued their winning ways at Davidson on Tuesday night by a margin of 76-51.
After sinking the Citadel’s battleship, the Hoyas looked forward to a more formidable opponent in the Wildcats. Davidson played a tough first half, leading 12-11 at the 9:15 mark. From there, first-year guard Jonathan Wallace stroked a three to key a 13-3 run that would carry the Hoyas to a 35-24 halftime lead. Wallace’s trifecta was one of four he hit in the half; he would end the game with a team-high 20 points, shooting six-for-eight from behind the arc.
Georgetown picked up the second half where they left off, opening their lead to as much as 15 on first-year Jeff Green’s lay-up. Davidson, however, stormed back, cutting the deficit to 49-40 with close to 13 minutes remaining.
The remainder of the game turned into the Ashanti Cook show, as the junior guard showed the flashes of brilliance that many anticipated upon his arrival to the Hilltop two seasons ago. The next three minutes of the game saw the Hoyas hit four three-pointers, with two by Cook, to take a commanding 61-43 lead. All 17 of Cook’s points came in the second half.
Junior forward Brandon Bowman chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds and first-year forward Jeff Green added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. All told, Georgetown shot a phenomenal 51.6 percent from downtown with more than half of their field-goal attempts coming from behind the arc. Additionally, the 16 three-pointers shattered the record of 12, tied in the previous game against Citadel.
In a game played over Thanksgiving break, Georgetown showed flashes of the shooting touch they lacked against Temple as they soundly beat the Citadel. The Hoyas raced out to an early start, leading 21-2 with merely five minutes gone in the game. Georgetown shot at a 42.9 percent clip from behind the arc, including five three-pointers from Bowman, who would finish with 23 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth career double-double.
By the end of the half the Hoyas had built their lead to 36-15. That margin would grow as high as 40 before the game was over. Cook played a solid game with 14 points and three assists, and first-year center Roy Hibbert notched his second-career double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
