The Georgetown women’s basketball team yielded mixed results in their last three outings, losing to Utah last Monday, beating Delaware last Saturday for their first victory of the season and losing to Richmond on Wednesday night.
The contest against Richmond was a seesaw battle that saw neither team establish control until the very end as Georgetown faded in the second half, scoring just one point in the final three and a half minutes to fall 62-50.
The Hoyas kept the contest close in the beginning against Utah. The Utes, however, pulled away in the second half, at one point leading by 15. The Hoyas attempted to cut into this deficit but Utah sunk six-of-eight free-throws in the final 51 seconds bringing the final score to 64-53.
“We played good defense and held them to 23 points,” Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. “But we didn’t shoot the ball well.”
The Hoyas shot just 33.8 percent from the field for the game, a sure sign of the team’s weakness. “Shooting is a mental game,” Williams-Flournoy said. “We just have to practice shooting and be ready to shoot.”
Georgetown faired better in their next game, beating the Delaware Blue Hens 67-56. This was the first win of the season and the first victory under new head coach Williams-Flournoy. First-year forward Kieraah Marlow and senior guard Sarah Jenkins paced the Hoyas with a team-high 14 points apiece. Senior forward Varda Tamoulianis and senior guard Mary Lisicky pitched in noteworthy point contributions of 13 and 12 points respectively.
Scoring has been well distributed for the Hoyas in the past three games. In the Utah loss Lisicky, Jenkins and Marlow all recorded 11 and the Delaware game saw four players score in double digits. “It is very good when you have even scoring,” Williams-Flournoy said. “I’d rather have four players in double figures instead of one player scoring 30.”
First-year forward Kieraah Marlow is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game so far. Marlow seems to be fitting in nicely with the rest of the team. “[Marlow] has accepted the starting position and her role on the team,” Williams-Flournoy said.
Lisicky has provided a solid performance so far this season, averaging 12.3 points and 7 assists per game. Jenkins has shot a phenomenal 71.4 percent from the three point arc.
“Sara Jenkins has been a bright spot this season,” William Flournoy said “[She’s] one of our guards who is shooting well right now.”
