After a three-game winning streak, the Georgetown women’s basketball team dropped two games this week, losing 72-58 to No. 6 Notre Dame on Saturday and 67-49 to No. 11 Connecticut on Wednesday at McDonough Gymnasium . The women slipped to 9-14 overall, 4-8 in the Big East.
“We had two tough teams,” Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. “Coming off a three-game win streak and having to play No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 11 Connecticut, I thought they did really well.”
Facing the Irish on Saturday, the Hoyas started off slow on offense, going down 8-1 early. With five minutes left in the first half, the Irish held a 17 point lead, but the Hoyas were able to put together a 12-4 run to cut the lead to nine, ending the first half down 35-26.
Georgetown started the second half with eight straight points from first-year guard Kristin Heidloff and senior forward Varda Tamoulianis. At the 12:40 mark, senior guard Mary Lisicky closed the gap with two free throws, pulling the Hoyas within two points. Notre Dame closed the game on 19-of-23 shooting. The Hoyas were out-rebounded 42-21 and finished with a 41 percent field-goal percentage.
The Hoyas looked to rebound from the loss Wednesday against No. 11 Connecticut. Georgetown started off strong in the first half, going up 9-2 early in the first half with three early jumpers by senior guard Bethany LeSueur. The Huskies bounced back halfway through the period going on a 22-5 run to end the first half on their way to a 34-20 lead at the half.
“We have to understand that every team makes runs,” LeSueur said. “We are going to make our runs too. I think that, especially since we’re a little bit young, we have to stay calm, relaxed, hold on to the ball and run a good offense.”
Connecticut continued to build their lead into the second half, posting a 16-0 run to begin the period. Junior guard Ann Strother finished with 20 points, half of which came in the second, including two of the four shots she hit from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Nicole Wolff also had a good shooting night, hitting 2 of 3 from downtown and finishing with 13 points.
For the Hoyas, Kieraah Marlow was perfect from behind the 3-point line, hitting both shots finishing with 10 points on the night. LeSueur finished with 18 points and 7 of 16 from the field.
The Huskies edged Georgetown 38-35 in rebounding while holding the Hoyas to 33 percent shooting from the field. Connecticut forced 25 turnovers while outscoring the Hoyas 12-7 coming off the bench.
“Our turnovers were in a more crucial time,” Williams-Flournoy said. “It’s different turning the ball over when you have the lead versus when you’re behind.”
The Hoyas look to get in the win column again when they travel to Morgantown, WV to take on the Mountaineers.
