Women’s Basketball

Georgetown’s women’s basketball team extended their losing streak to three games losing 73-61 to West Virginia on Saturday. On Tuesday, the team broke that streak defeating St. John’s 64-57. The Hoyas stand at 10-15 overall this season and hold a 5-9 record in the Big East.

The Hoyas led through most of the first half against the Mountaineers until the very end of the period, when West Virginia sunk a three-pointer to take a 35-34 lead into the locker room. The Hoyas shot 46 percent from the field in the first half while holding West Virginia to 37 percent shooting.

The Mountaineers took a 47-45 lead with 11 minutes left in the game and maintained the lead until the end of the contest. West Virginia built its lead to 13 on missed opportunities and turnovers. Georgetown shot 35 percent from the field and 43 percent from downtown in the game. The Hoyas committed 14 turnovers and grabbed 36 boards in comparison to West Virginia’s eight turnovers and 44 boards.

On Tuesday at St. John’s, the Hoyas defeated the Red Storm for the 11th straight time. Flawless 4-4 shooting from downtown, including 3 for 3 from sophomore guard Kate Carlin, put the Hoyas up 18-11 midway through the first period. The Hoyas held the Red Storm scoreless for four minutes and extended their lead to 14 points, but St. John’s rallied late in the period, cutting the lead to 33-23 to finish the first half.

St. John’s put together a 19-4 run to start the second half, taking a 42-37 lead with 15 minutes left. The Hoyas came back with an 18-4 run to regain the lead toward the end of the half. Although the Red Storm came within three points in the final minutes, the Hoyas shot 7 of 8 from the line to secure the victory.

The Hoyas shot only 36 percent from the field but held St. John’s to 30 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent shooting from behind the arc. The Red Storm edged Georgetown in rebounding 49-42. The Hoyas had three players score in double figures with Carlin scoring 16, first-year forward Kieraah Marlow grabbing 14 and junior guard Bethany LeSueur chipping in 13. Senior guard Mary Lisicky moved into 10th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,268 points by sinking a three pointer early in the game, and senior forward Varda Tamoulianis grabbed the single season record in blocks with 53 after posting four blocks in the game.

The Hoyas return home for their last two games. They take on the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at McDonough Gymnasium and take on Syracuse on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. to close out the regular season. The Wildcats currently hold the fourth spot in the Big East and Syracuse is currently on a six-game losing streak, including a loss to Georgetown on Feb. 2.

Baseball

Georgetown’s men’s baseball team (2-3) defeated Davidson 17-12 on Monday to take the series by winning two of three games.

Davidson led 3-0 after some quick runs in the first inning, however, the Hoyas worked their way back, cutting the lead to 3-2 in the third inning.

In the fifth inning, sophomore transfer Mark McLaughlin’s two-run homerun gave Georgetown a 4-3 lead.

With the scored tied at five in the bottom of the eighth, Georgetown opened the game up, scoring 10 runs to take the lead 15-5. Davidson countered with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Hoyas took the game and the series.

McLaughlin finished the game with five RBI and three runs. Senior pitcher Mike Halloran got the victory after pitching 2 1/3 inning of relief and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
