The Georgetown men and women’s track and field team turned in several solid performances last weekend at the Duke Asics Invitational in Durham, NC. Several members of the Hoyas squad put up qualifying times for the NCAA, IC4A, ECAC and Big East.
Leading the way for the Hoyas was junior Chris Lukezic whose time of 1:50.22 in the 800-meter race placed him second and qualified him for NCAA. Lukezic’s time places him No. 29 in the NCAA rankings for the 800 behind No. 25 senior Tommy Manning, who qualified two weeks ago.
“Chris put a great time in those conditions,” Head Coach Ron Helmer said.
For the women, first-year Maggie Infeld finished fourth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:09.17 that qualified her for the NCAA as well. Her performance this weekend put her at No. 26 in the NCAA rankings, the third best run by a first-year in the category.
The 4X100 and 4X800 relay squads for both the men and women put up qualifying times for the IC4A and ECAC respectively. The men posted times of 42.18 and 7:40.94 and the women put up times of 47.80 and 8:55.35.
“We’re relatively young in those areas, but they’re coming around,” Helmer said. “We didn’t even run a 4X400 which is our better team.”
The men had several other qualifiers for both the Big East and IC4A. Junior Chris Bonner won the 800-meter development race in a Big East qualifying time of 1:52.19 and sophomore Jonathan Geffrard clocked a Big East qualifying time of 11.02 in the 1,000-meter dash. Among the IC4A qualifiers was senior Rod Koborsi, who ran a time of 3:50.91 in the 1,500-meter race. Koborsi has already qualified for the NCAA in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 28:35.86, the fourth-best time posted in the country.
“Rod in the 1,500, which isn’t his event, was very good,” Helmer said. “He’s tuning up for Mt. SAC this weekend.”
Other qualifiers for IC4A for the men included senior Charlie Millioen and junior Steve Meinelt in the 5,000-meter run with times of 14:30.78 and 14:40.05 respectively.
On the women’s side, sophomores Kandace Ferguson and Ashley Mondie and junior Sabine Knothe qualified for ECAC. Ferguson’s time of 24.88 in the 200-meter dash was good as was Knothe’s time of 4:34.11 in the 1,500-meter. Mondie’s jump of 11.75 meters in the triple jump qualified her for ECAC. Her long jump of 5.44 meters also qualified her for the Big East Championship.
“For that group [who qualified], they were running real good this weekend,” Helmer said. “We’ll take a week off and then get ready for the Penn Relays, which is a big event for Georgetown. We have a lot of history and tradition there.”
