Streak snapped

On Sept. 5, Loyola (MD) handed the Georgetown women’s soccer team its first loss of the season. Nine opponents, roughly 800 miles of travel, 19 goals, one tournament win and nearly a full calendar month later, the Hoyas’ (10-2-1, 3-1-1 BE) second loss, this one on the road against conference rival Syracuse, ended the team’s all-time longest winning streak at eight games.

That loss came in heartbreaking fashion, no less, in a marathon contest that remained scoreless until the second sudden death overtime period. Early in the fourth minute of the second overtime period, Syracuse senior forward Nikki Spartano directed a pass from first-year defender Lauren Capelli into the upper right corner of the net, keeping the Orange (3-5-4, 2-0-3 BE) unbeaten in conference play while dealing the Hoyas their first conference loss.

Georgetown combined timely goals and solid defense to begin its weekend road trip through New York with a 2-1 win against another traditional Big East foe, St. John’s (5-6-2, 1-3-1 BE). The hero of the game was sophomore forward Elaina Filauro whose 25-yard blast off of a long pass from fellow sophomore Karen Waskewich broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half.

Despite having their winning streak snapped, the Hoyas remain poised to set the all-time record for wins in a season, needing two victories in their final six games to best the mark of 11 set by the 2002 squad.

The team will look to take care of that this weekend as they host two Big East matches on North Kehoe Field, the first on Friday against Louisville beginning at 3:00 p.m. and the second on Sunday against Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m.
