The Georgetown women’s volleyball team split two games on the road, defeating DePaul 3-0 (30-22, 30-28, 30-24) on Saturday and dropping a game to No. 9 Notre Dame 3-0 (30-12, 30-22, 30-20) on Sunday. With these results, the Hoyas dropped to 2-7 in the Big East and 6-16 overall.

On Saturday, the Hoyas took a 7-3 lead in game one and never looked back, holding DePaul (4-17 overall, 1-7 BE) to only .100 hitting. In game two, Georgetown started off in a 9-4 hole, but pulled the 29-28 win in the end. In the final game, the Hoyas raced to a 9-2 lead and held the Blue Demons to a .000 hit percentage. Senior outside hitter Rachel Nelson finished with 10 kills and first-year setter Caitlin Boland led the Hoyas with 33 assists.

The Fighting Irish (18-1 overall, 8-0 BE) went into Sunday’s game against Georgetown riding an 11-game win streak. They extended that streak against the Hoyas, holding them to .045 hitting throughout the game.

In game one, Notre Dame jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the road to a 30-12 score. In game two, the Hoyas had a 16-15 lead until the Irish went on a 9-4 run to take the game. The Hoyas found themselves down again in the third game trailing the Irish 10-3 on their way to losing the game 30-20. Nelson finished with nine kills and sophomore setter Kate Fisher dished out 20 assists for the match.

Due to numerous injuries to Georgetown’s more experienced players, two first-year players are starting this season. Despite the various injuries, the team still maintains a positive attitude.

“We’ve had injury problems, not everybody on the team can jump, but our team stays pretty positive,” Head Coach Li Liu said. “We’re pretty positive and working really hard at practice. We’re playing as a team even though we’re not winning.”

The Hoyas looking to regain their swing on Friday against the UConn Huskies (10-12 overall, 2-6 BE) at McDonough Gymnasium at 8:00 p.m.

“Right now we don’t have any concerns (for the upcoming game),” Liu said. “All we have is each other, work hard and play as a team. We just have to focus on the basics and finish the season strong.”
