The Georgetown track & field team completed another impressive performance this past Saturday at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md. The Hoyas finished the indoor meet with nine top-four finishes, grabbing first place in four of the events.
Several freshmen, including Khyle Osborne, Jonathan Okon and Kenny Mitchell, led the way for the men’s side. In his debut, Osborne took first place in the men’s shot put with a distance of 44 feet 8 and a half inches, long enough to qualify for the Big East Championships. Meanwhile, Okon nabbed third place with a triple jump distance of 44 feet nine inches and classmate Kenny Mitchell ran the 60m dash in 6.98 seconds, good enough for a fourth-place finish.
“The thing I’m most pleased with is we have freshmen that are starting to perform on a pretty good level in areas where we haven’t been real strong over the last several years,” Track and Field Director Ron Helmer said.
The women proved equally impressive, successfully completing the 4×400m relay with the win and the Hoyas’ best time of the season, 3:47.73. Junior Ashley Mondie finished the day with notable finishes in two events, winning the triple jump and landing at fourth place in the long jump, with distances of 38 feet 11 1/2 inches and 18 feet 1?4 inches, respectively. These distances qualify Mondie for the Big East Championships in both events along with junior Kandance Ferguson, whose time of 2:16.29 earned her a victory her first ever 800m race.
“It’s starting to happen at this point in the year,” Helmer said. “This weekend and next weekend we really look to ratchet up our performance and put ourselves in competitive situations in order to come up with some really good times.” Next weekend the Hoyas hope to tune up for the upcoming indoor championships as athletes head to Boston, Mass. for the Terrier Classic, George Mason, and Penn State for the National Open.
