Try your potluck

Eating in the dining hall is rarely a pleasure, but last week Leo’s was absolute hell. Packed with bodies, the lower level was impossible to navigate and empty seats were as rare as appetizing entrees. Students may not have the time or resources to cook an entire meal, but they need not brave the wilds of the cafeteria, or suffer the seclusion of a microwave dinner in their room. The solution: have a potluck!

The art of potlucking has been around since 16th-century England, but decades of church ladies have tarnished its image with bonnets and checkered cloth. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can reclaim the idea by throwing your very own potluck party.

Even a simple party needs some planning, and there are few simple steps to a successful potluck. Start by picking a theme for your group meal, it will make things more coherent in the end. Mexican is easy to do, and gives you an excuse for margaritas (not that one is needed). You can really do just about anything.

Although there are times when you may only want to eat cake, chances are that others may be looking for a little bit more diversity in their meal. Assign your friends a general category so you don’t end up with just three salads. After this you are pretty much on your way. Just make sure you don’t forget to assign someone drinks.

Potlucks may not be fancy, but they’re a lot cheaper then going to a restaurant and they sure beat Leo’s. If you are tired of feeling claustrophobic downstairs at the dining hall, why not host a memorial potluck for Darnall? Since it doesn’t seem like GUSA will be doing anything with that space anytime soon.
