Represent the district

March 23, 2006

Spring is officially here! Are you still bogged down with midterms, scuffling across campus shivering from the wind? Online shopping is the cure to your winter blahs.

Online shopping shouldn’t be limited to eBay or department stores. How about venturing off the well-beaten track and explore some unconventional shopping websites.

DistrictTees is one of these sites worth exploring. It’s a local t-shirt company that sells D.C.- and non-D.C.-themed t-shirts, hoodies and, curiously enough, underwear online. DistrictTees is the brainchild of two friends, Marcos Salazar and Daniel Hindenberg-Jones, “who wanted to try something different.”

“One night after many beers we started talking about stuff we’d like to see on shirts and complained about how we never saw the kind of shirts we wanted,” Salazar said. “So we decided to just start making the shirts ourselves. (https://skinnyninjamom.com/) Then we had more beers and promptly forgot the whole thing.”

Luckily for us they eventually sobered up and created DistrictTees. The tongue-in-cheek slogan apparel has developed a cult following among people who, according to the creators, “want to show people where they live, who want to put those escalator-standing tourists in their place.”

With gems like “Hill staffers do it on the floor,” “Friends don’t let friends wear their collar up” or simple printed names of D.C. neighborhoods under the city stars and bars, these shirts are a great way to show what D.C. is all about, especially when wearing them at home during the summer. For those not so proud to live here, the “Lifer” slogan is probably the best option.
