This past Sunday, the Georgetown men’s tennis team stomped through two Big East opponents to earn a 2-1 record in their conference. Despite the lack of an official head coach, the young squad, boasting only one senior and two juniors, proved to be well prepared this weekend at the McDonough Tennis complex.
Assistant Coach Brook Deming acts as the leader for both the men’s and women’s teams. Though he has not been named interim head coach, and the team’s next coach is rumored to join the team after he finishes the season at his current job, the team has rallied behind Deming and rallied off consecutive wins.
“Brook has done a really good job working with both teams,” sophomore Teddy Tywang said. “I’m looking forward to him staying on after the arrival of our new coach.”
The back-to-back victories locked the team into a spot for the conference tournament which, will be held in Tampa, Fla.
On Saturday the Hoyas defeated the University of Connecticut, and on Sunday, they tallied their second straight win against Villanova. “We knew the Villanova match would be the tougher of the two,” Tywang said. “We really set the tone by winning all of our doubles matches, and fortunately, we were able to carry the momentum through.”
In singles, Etienne Paris led the way for the Hoyas as he beat Villanova’s Dimitri Chimerakis. The matchup proved to be an interesting one since both Georgetown’s Paris and Villanova’s Chimerakis hail from South Florida. The familiar foes have gone head-to-head eight times in the past six years and have even teamed up to play doubles together twice.
“We have been friends for a while now,” Chimerakis said. “Etienne played tough, it’s always fun to match up with him since we have known each other for so long.”
The Hoyas head to Fredericksburg, Virginia today to play the Mary Washington Eagles at the Battleground Athletic Complex at 3:30 p.m.
