The Georgetown women’s tennis team struggled in two contests this weekend, falling to Hampton on Saturday and St. John’s on Sunday. The losses continued a tough season for the Hoyas.
Georgetown’s new coach, Gordie Ernst, pointed to the team’s cancelled games as the single biggest factor in determining the outcome of Sunday’s match. So far this season, the team has had four competitions—against Seton Hall, George Washington, UMBC and Amherst—postponed or cancelled.
“[The St. John’s team] is just a little more experienced, and that shows pretty much across the board,” Ernst said.
On Saturday against Hampton, the Hoyas lost all three doubles matches and won only one of six singles matches.
On Sunday, the Hoyas were swept across the board. St. John’s took all three of the doubles matches and hung on in some very close singles matches, eventually taking all six of them.
Sophomore Steph Cohen, one of the team’s two captains, battled through the second singles match, but it ended in a tiebreaker that finished 13-11 in favor of St. John’s. The first singles match was another close one, but in the end St. John’s freshman Natalie Tumsevica defeated sophomore Liz Winokur 6-4, 6-2. Winokur was plagued throughout by some questionable calls—including one that won the first set for Tumsevica.
“Every point was a grind and a battle, and unfortunately it went their way more than it went ours,” Ernst said.
The Hoyas’ next two matches are at home against Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday and West Virginia on Saturday, they before going on the road to face Longwood on Sunday.
