GU pitches way to victory

April 6, 2006

The Georgetown Baseball team came out on top in a close win against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers on Wednesday, winning 2-1 behind solid pitching and defense.

Freshman right-hander Darren Sizemore went eight and one-third innings and struck out eight while allowing only one run. Though 10 Retrievers reached base, only one crossed the plate thanks to stingy defense by the Hoyas.

“We came up with a lot of key plays in a lot of key situations,” Sizemore said of the defense behind him. “We threw a lot of guys out, and that really cut down on their runners.”

The Hoyas struck first, opening the scoring on an RBI single by junior Brandon Davis in the bottom of the second. The Retrievers answered right away in the top of the third, when UMBC’s Mike Scheffel reached base with two outs and came around to score on a single by Joe Fowler. The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth, when Georgetown senior captain Ryan Craft drove in fellow senior Drew Dargen with a double.

Sizemore continued to stay strong throughout the game, until he was relieved by sophomore Dan Kennedy in the ninth. Kennedy picked up the save by retiring two batters and ending the game with a strikeout.

“Darren was able to keep his fastball down, and when he does that he can use his great change-up to really fool hitters,” Craft said.

The win improved Georgetown’s record to 13-17 while UMBC fell to 10-14 on the season. Next up for the Hoyas is a three game series against conference rival Louisville (12-17, 4-2 BE) beginning tomorrow.
