The No. 3 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team came into their matchup yesterday well prepared at the Multi-Sport Field against No. 4 Virginia.
The Hoyas’ previous four games had all been decided by one point. Three of them came in overtime. Yesterday, however, the Hoyas (10-2) left no doubt, defeating Virginia (13-3) 8-4.
Georgetown did much of its damage in the first half. By the 13:21 mark, the Hoyas owned the 6 shining on the scoreboard next to the Cavaliers’ 1. Virginia scored once more before ending the half in a 6-2 hole.
Junior captain Coco Stanwick led the Hoyas early on. She scored two of the Hoyas’ six first half goals.
The star of the game, however, was Hoya junior attacker Schuyler Sutton. She held the hot stick of the game, scoring a career-high four goals. These tallies were Georgetown’s final four in the contest, and all came unassisted.
Senior Tyler Leachman gave a strong effort for the Cavaliers, but her three goals couldn’t keep Virginia in the game.
Georgetown ranks first in the country in scoring defense, and it used this against Virginia. Junior Chloe Asselin and sophomore Zan Morley both caused two turnovers on the defensive end.
Junior goalie Maggie Koch put together another impressive performance in front of the net. She allowed four goals on 16 shots on goal by the nation’s 14th best offense.
Georgetown next travels to play Connecticut on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
