Men hit losing skid

September 7, 2006

For the Georgetown men’s soccer team, one could have hoped for a better beginning to the Brian Wiese coaching era. As it stands, the Hoyas (1-3-0) will go into the Big East season on a three-game losing streak after dropping matches to eventual champion then-No. 8 Creighton (1-2-1) and Missouri State (2-1-1) at the Ameritas Classic in Omaha, Neb. this past weekend.

“I am a believer that results will take care of themselves,” Wiese said. “You don’t worry about the score, you worry about doing everything right. But at some point we’re going to have to start getting results to fall our way to keep everyone pushing forward.”

In front of 3,746 fans at Morrison Stadium on Friday, the Hoyas got down early en route to a 3-2 loss, as first-year forward Jeff Thayer took a long pass into the box and placed the ball past Hoya senior keeper Andrew Keszler just 4:37 into the game.

Eighteen minutes later the Hoyas would own a 2-1 lead, only their second of the young season. At the 25:44 mark junior forward Mike Glaccum registered his second goal of the season, weaving the ball through the defense unassisted before nailing a shot in the back of the net from just seven yards out. Only three minutes later the Hoyas capitalized on the newfound momentum as senior midfielder Daniel Grasso scored the go-ahead goal, his third of the year, off a rebound.

After Creighton’s junior forward Tom Bohnenkamp tied the game at 2-2 at the 27:02 mark of the first half, the game would remain scoreless until 8:24 into the first overtime session, as first year defender Chris Shuler, the Missouri Valley Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, scored the game-winning goal.

“This is probably one of the better games we played so far,” Schramm said. “Not so much the result, but proving to ourselves that we can hang with anyone. We’re proud of it, but we’re not satisfied with it.”

The meeting was only the second between the two teams, as Creighton downed host Georgetown last season 6-0 on October 19.

“Georgetown is a much improved team from last year,” Creighton Head Coach Bob Warming said in a university press release. “I think they will go on to win a lot of games this season.”

Looking to rebound against Missouri State on Sunday, the Hoyas responded with arguably their worst effort of the season in a 2-0 loss, their first scoreless game of the year. In front of only 171 spectators, Georgetown managed just one shot on goal, one by sophomore forward Richard Frank, to drop their third match in a row.

Georgetown hopes to pick up the intensity as they open their Big East and home season tomorrow on North Kehoe at 3 p.m. as the Hoyas host the Syracuse Orange (3-0-0).

“Our guys are really excited to be playing at home and in front of our students,” Wiese said. “We’ll have great energy in the game…and I feel that if we do everything right we will be in a position to win.”
