Georgetown tennis continues to show rapid progress under the leadership of new Head Coach Gordie Ernst. After being routed by the University of Delaware last spring in a 6-1 loss, the Hoyas avenged the loss this past Sunday with a 4-3 victory over the Blue Hens at the McDonough Tennis Complex.
“It would be an understatement to say I’m happy about this win. This is the same team as last year with the exception of sophomore transfer Kelsey Darnell. It shows how dedicated our players are this year,” Ernst said.
The match was kicked off with doubles play. The number one team, comprised of juniors Liz Winokur and Adrian Gin, dropped its match 8-3, and number two doubles partners, junior Steph Cohen and sophomore Briana Kearney, secured their victory with an 8-6 score.
This left the responsibility of clinching the doubles point on the shoulders of senior captain Eileen Boyle and sophomore Courtney Olsen. With their 8-6 victory, the number three doubles team was able to pull out the doubles point for the Hoyas and sent Georgetown into singles match play with a 1-0 advantage.
Winokur led the Hoyas into singles play at the number one position but suffered her worst spanking in over a year, dropping a two setter 6-0, 6-1.
“I have not been beaten that badly since freshman year. I’m just happy the rest of our girls were able to get the win for us,” Winokur said.
Olsen continued her solid play after helping to capture the doubles point by winning easily 6-3, 6-1 against her singles opponent. The two other Hoya singles points are credited to Cohen 6-1, 6-3 playing at the number three position and sophomore Kelsey Darnell, who claimed the match for the Hoyas with her 6-3, 6-2 victory at number five.
“Last year, the players were looking forward to having their weekends free. Now they’re excited to get out on the court and compete every weekend. This new enthusiasm is translating to our success,” Ernst said.
The Hoyas will attempt to continue their success this weekend at the Hampton Roads Invite in Hampton Roads, VA. Play will commence tomorrow afternoon and run through Sunday.
